Certaldo: Medieval Enchantment in the Elsa Valley

Discover the medieval town of Certaldo, one of the most charming in Tuscany. Famous for being the birthplace of Giovanni Boccaccio, Certaldo is a magical place that retains an atmosphere of yesteryear. Recognized with the Touring Club Italia’s Orange Flag for excellence in tourism, food and wine, culture and the environment, this town offers an unforgettable journey through time.

It has a lower, modern part and an upper part that constitutes the ancient medieval core, circumscribed by walls with 3 entrance gates: Porta al Sole, Porta Alberti and Porta del Rivellino. Certaldo Alta, the ancient medieval core, is the beating heart of the town. This pedestrian area, accessible by funicular railway or on foot, is a treasure trove of history and culture. It is home to Boccaccio’s house museum, where you can explore the life and works of the famous writer, surrounded by historic furnishings and a library that holds several editions of the Decameron.

Events and Traditions: The Heart of Certaldo

July is a great time to visit Certaldo, when Mercantia, an international street theater festival featuring performances, music and arts and crafts, is held. In September, the town relives the novellas of Boccaccio’s Decameron with a historical reenactment, offering visitors an authentic experience of its rich history and traditions.
